'The History of Modern France' Jonathan Fenby

Simon and Schuster

The History of Modern France begins, of course, with the French Revolution (which started in 1789) and continues to the present day . The book sums this period up very well and tells everything with a satisfying amount of detail; it talks about many different aspects of French history from 1789 to the mid 2010s. One feature that I really enjoyed, was the biography pages which helped me to understand the most important personalities. I enjoyed all the book thoroughly, but I was most amazed by the creation of the Fifth Republic and the way General de Gaulle led the French for a second time in a period of crisis.
